First time owners rarely have a difficult dog. They have a normal dog and no reference point, so every ordinary bit of puppy behaviour feels like a warning sign.

With small children in the house, the goal is not a dog that does tricks. It is a dog that can be ignored: settled in the corner while homework, tea and bedtime happen around it.

Working breeds are not badly behaved, they are unemployed. A dog bred for eight hours of work a day and given a twenty minute walk will invent a job — usually one you don't like.
